Voltage loss and/or oily gummed up drive are 2 likely problems.

Starter drive might be dry & need greased.

Couple of issues could cause the problem you describe: oil on the starter drive (clean, dry and lube with a dry lube), battery voltage low.

Mark, Don't put grease your starter drive. If they are greasy or oily the lubricant will gum up, collect clutch dust, and stick. The best lubricant is something like Lock-ease, graphite in a light oil...

Thanks for the quick response and advice. I'll pull the starter and do a thorough cleaning and use dry lube. I'll report back with my findings and results. ~ Mark

before you start taking anything apart, check that your battery is fully charged because your description indicates weak battery seriously Just checking for 12.5V is not enough, take it to a shop...

Looks ok from here. Can you get in position to look at any of the ring gear teeth? How old is your battery?

Kurt The heavy spring is intact as well as the retainer clip. I still need to lay eyes on my ring gear to confirm its condition but by all visual inspections other than the drive gear it ses to be ok....
